So I recently checked up on Red Cross policy to see if it had changed regarding my (eventual) eligibility to donate -- which it had, but not in the way I expected. Instead of a twenty-five year wait period, I just can't give blood. No expiration date.
In fact, no one who's spent a cumulative of five years any part of Europe other than the former USSR since 1980 is eligible to give blood. Which says to me: I must have something really scary potentially lurking in my blood.
Some research later, I have much more respect for proteins. Those things are determined.
