y'know...

Randomly, I think this:

It's kind of interesting... there's plenty of stories out there that suggest multiple worlds, all of which have not yet been explored; the plot usually follows a small but intrepid group of explorers as they jump from world to world, meet the natives, deal with culture shock, and discover How the Universe Works. And when it comes to writing crossover fanfiction, it's really easy to reach for one of them with one hand and pretty much anything else with the other.

Unless the anything else is another of these stories.

It's too much of a conflict in the whole How the Universe Works bit, I think. Especially when you try to mix US!shows/comics with anime/manga, or black-box science with blatant magic, or planet-hopping with alternate dimensions. Especially when you're dealing with more than two stories at once.

I mean, I've seen someone take the Star Wars premise that there are all these planets out there, and just sort of stick Rurouni Kenshin onto one of them. I've seen someone turn Atem of YuuGiOu into one of Stargate's Goa'uld. I've seen the main cast of Tsubasa: Resevoir Chronicles visit the world of One Piece, and Magic Kaito's Kaitou Kid decide to hitch a ride with Riku of Kingdom Hearts. And I'm not even going to get into the way Marvel keeps cameoing characters from one series into another. There are more out there; these are just a few I can think of off-hand.

But try combining TSR with Stargate. Hard to imagine, right? Now throw in Kingdom Hearts. The potential meeting between Jack O'Neill, Kurogane, and Axel might (or might not) be fun to imagine, but how could you believably bring them together? Without resorting to warnings like AU, OOC, and OC? Or Yuuko, for that matter, though even with her I still think things would be kind of difficult.

Oh well. *back to reading*
