in my mind's eye
May. 8th, 2005 10:10 amThere's a dream I have every now and then. It isn't exactly a nightmare, because I'm never exactly scared. It's more like I dream a horror story. There's a cruel man, who has managed to make duplicates of himself - five - and to create a machine to "fix" people - that is, put them back together better than before. He's a sadist and a masochist, and he has a wife (who loves him but is going insane from his treatment of her) and a mistress (who only wants to escape). The wife keeps on trying to kill the mistress, and the mistress keeps on trying to escape, but she's always captured and then she's tortured a bit. I remember only three scenes very clearly:
(1) the man cutting bread, and cutting his thumb off in the process, over and over again, and the machine fixing him every time. He screams in pain, but he keeps doing it because it's fun.
(2) the man has caught the mistress after she manages to go back to her own flesh and not the perfect one his machine created for her, and he gives her a choice: she can either stay where she is and be blinded by the light, or she can throw herself back into the running ... aaagh, I had a word for it. It was supposed to be some sort of farm machine, like a wheat thrasher... Basically this thing that would cut her up into little tiny pieces. He's been wanting to see this happen, so he's trying to force her to do it. Since she won't, he turns it off and makes her get into this round thing of bars for more torture - I think something like skinning parts of her? - and the wife goes out through the quiet farmthing (the wife had been dead before, so the mistress is surprised to see her, but the man isn't). Only then it starts back up and she decides she'd rather help, so she's crawling underneath it to get back in when something makes her jerk up and she gets pulled into the machine and chopped into little pieces.
Somehow this leads to (3) they're searching for something (the wife? I'm not sure) and the mistress is with one of the copies of the man. She notices that the horse she's riding somehow has some sort of jet propulsion system and thinks, "horse I must ride to find [can't remember], you now help me to escape!" and dashes off. But she gets chased.
At this point I decided I got tired of all this darkness, and since I was close enough to waking to make a difference I had a portal to a better world open up and she got through but her chasers just rebounded off it because they were too dark.
And then I woke up.
This dream, especially that wheat thrasher-thing, is familiar somehow.
