I was walking back from dinner (at Scripps) and had just passed Frary when the combination of details -- the early darkness, combined with the yellow lights that made nearly everything appear in shades of sepia; the rain; the small squares that made up the sidewalk; the trees that lined the street; the dampness on top of my hair; the heavy, full-length but hoodless coat; the lack of an umbrella; the city version of silence and the lack of rushing cars; the not quite present chill -- made me think of England, of London.

Despite the combination being mostly of generally unpleasant components, I was homesick.

You know you love a place when you miss even it's bad parts.
