stroking the ego

Because I feel the need to show off, I think I'll point out the icons I use that I did intensive work on. (I should add "icons" to my interest list, shouldn't I?) Or maybe I would be better off just talking about each of them.
I really don't know why I'm doing this, but hey - whatever. In order of their appearance here:
"Orchid" actually comes from the same source as my background. The art itself isn't mine, but I bought the scarf, scanned it in, and, in this case, outlined it. Photoshop work (as most everything is), two layers.
"Dawn" is by Joseph Michael Linsner, and she's from Cry for Dawn, which I haven't actually read, but really like. Those of you who know me probably know why. Crop and color burn, one layer
"Sexy" is also by Linsner. A bunch of them are. That's my title, because it seemed appropriate. Crop, minor color burn, fancy edging; four layers.
"Wind" is yet another Linsner. Be patient, I'm doing them all at once (I think). I think that's actually supposed to be Dawn there, but I'm not sure. Crop and fancy edging; two layers.
"DC Death" is by Linsner (again) but looks a lot like Neil Gaiman's Death when you hide the fact that she's naked, which is why I chose her. Crop, fancy edging, and some luminosity work; two layers.
"WTF" is the last Linsner for a while. That's his Death. Not much here, just the usual crop and a fuzzy edging; one layer.
"Horus" involved tracing an image, inverting it, removing the white, and then adding in the orchid base underneath. Two layers.
"Flame" is, I think, the simplest of the ones I made. There's that picture of the flame, with a square cut-out, and a gradiation based on the flame itself behind. Pretty basic; two layers.
"Ankh", as I remember, was uncooperative. It was originally red and white and black, I think, but i wanted to have that fire that's there now, and the red did not like going away, so I had to go back with a pencil and mini-paintbrush to get that space between the two white lines black. Then it was simply a matter of cutting out the middle and adding the fire behind it. Two layers.
"Smoke" isn't mine at all, and I know that's steam, but I don't care.
"Dragon" is another Linsner, yaaaaay. She originally wore green, though. Color modification, cut-out work, and fancy edging; three layers.
"Eye" is also completely not mine.
So is "Cherry Snow". You won't see me use it, because it's purely for backup purposes for the original story I'm currently working on.
"Kiss" - Linsner. I think we can recognise the style by now. All I did was the border; one layer.
"Cabbage" is really really old. I mostly keep it around to keep the character of my oldest entries. For this, I changed the background color and got rid of the ugly outline.
"Lattice Dawn" comes from the same picture as "Dawn", but without the color burn and with a different focus. It was made for someone else, but I actually kinda like it. Crop and lattice-work; three layers in progress, one completed.
"Kaesner" is the person who drew that rose. I took off the stem, made the background black, and softened, sharpened, and burned it until the strokes were no longer visible. Another old one; one layer.
"Loom" is just a crop.
"Chocolate" is another completely not mine.
"Kabuki" is me! from a couple years ago. The only icon older than this, actually is the cabbage. I took a picture of myself in high contrast, and outlined the first white and then red on a second layer, before filling in and catching any hiding single points. In other words, completely original.
"Shoes" I am amused by. Those were originally black, on a white background. Inverse, color change, burn, and crop, in that order; one layer.
"Grin" I found because I kept on coming across as too serious. Color change, cut-out work, and a simple glow over a plain black background; two layers. I like it.
"Bright Dawn" is the third in this series, only brightened, especially the eye. Yes, it's by Linsner. Latticework; three layers in creation.
"Maple" is just some random picture of a Japanese Maple that I found and liked and did lattice stuff on.
"Mllowr" is a picture of my cat, with the closest approximation to what she says in text below. All I did was crop and text, and a bit of burning towards the bottom to make it fade nicely into uniform black; two layers.
"Smirk" is because I had to have a picture of Schuldich, he being the reason why I had 'was' a cabbage for so long. The border he's standing in front of is all I did, because changing the background just wasn't working out.
"Lust" is Lust, what more can I say? She comes from the cover of Hagaren 39. I just made her hair black and took away the background.
"Blood" is, in fact, entirely mine. I drew the dragon (yes it is), scanned it in, resized and cropped it, burned it, and then had fun with a paint brush. Doubtless if I'd been thinking clearly at the time, it would have been several layers, but instead it's only one.
"Nastygrin" was originally black and white and lots of gray, which is why I wasn't using it. Sooo, I went back and added color. Eight layers total: background (original made sepia), skin, red, white, mouth outline, facial outline, and black (mostly hair), bottom to top. I feel quite reasonably proud of myself, I think, sincisdering it was all done with a paintbrush, a tiny amount of eraser, and some color tweaks. Who knows what chapter it's from?
Right. Back to work.
